Is my loved one eligible?
To qualify, care partners must complete a Florida Elder Affairs assessment with a case manager. After this assessment, which takes approximately 45 minutes, clients are assigned a respite care location and given a start date. Call (850) 386-2778 and ask to speak with a case manager to schedule your assessment today.
What can my loved one expect?
Alzheimer’s Project offers person-centered care at each respite location. Clients can expect opportunities to engage in diverse activities such as music and art therapy, pet therapy, guided exercise, group activities, games, and intergenerational socialization.
What can caregivers expect?
Care Partners can expect to enjoy a well-deserved break knowing their loved one is being cared for by Alzheimer’s Project staff. To ensure your loved one is a good fit for the program, there is a three-week trial period for each client. Clients may be dropped off any time after 9am but must be picked up before 3pm.

In-Home Respite: AmeriCorps for Veterans
Specialized program matching trained AmeriCorps volunteers with veteran families affected by dementia.

The AmeriCorps volunteer provides in-home companionship based respite care. The AmeriCorps volunteer is not qualified to assist with personal care or medical needs.

Becoming an AmeriCorps Member/Volunteer
The Alzheimer’s Project’s Legacy Corps for Veterans and Military Families Program provides a unique opportunity for members to support veterans and military families impacted by cognitive impairments. This program addresses the need for alternative respite care strategies for veteran and military caregivers, aiming to assess caregiver outcomes and enable clients to stay in their communities longer, thus delaying or preventing institutional care.
Member Benefits
- Monthly living allowance of $175
- Student loan forbearance with paid interest for duration of service
- Extensive dementia and professional development training
- Eligible to receive an education award upon completion of contracted hours
Member Expectations
- Complete 10+ hours of comprehensive dementia-specific training
- Offer weekly in-home respite care and assistance to individuals with cognitive impairments
- Provide non-medical care and companionship; engage clients with interactive activities
Member Eligibility
- Must be 18+ years old
- Must be a US citizen or lawful permanent resident alien
- Commit to a 1-year, 450 hour service contract
- Pass state and national background checks
- Must have reliable transportation
